Birthday Week Recap - Hiking, Waterparks & Food

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July holiday!  We had a great one and celebrated it in Little Rock and Hot Springs.  Over the last few years Shane and I have started going out of town for my birthday because we have realized that everyone is out of town for my birthday.  No one is usually here to celebrate, so it works out better for us to just have a little getaways anyways.  We had lots of good food that consisted of oysters at Pearl's on my birthday, steamed shrimp at Flying Fish in Little Rock, my favorite chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream cake on Wednesday and cupcakes that my sister-in-law made on Saturday night.  I also made sure to sport my red, white and blue on Thursday, and even Shane only packed red, white and blue shirts too.  = )

Thursday we drove to Little Rock, AR and hiked Pinnacle Mountain.  We made it to the top in 25 minutes and back down in another 20.  It was a record for us, and we had no idea what to do with the rest of our afternoon, as it normally takes us 2-3 hours.  We may have hiked faster than normal, but I think we both realized we were a little out of shape.  We stayed at a hotel downtown that was within walking distance to a lot of restaurants, so we just walked to Big Whiskeys for dinner and sat out on the patio.  It was a casual restaurant, and I had a wrap, and Shane had a burger.  People were gathering across the street for a fireworks show.  We decided to go ahead and walk back to the hotel around 8:00, and shortly after we got back to our room, we ended up having a great view of the fireworks out our window.

On Friday, we got up and drove to Magic Springs in Hot Springs.  We got there at 11:00 right as they opened and didn't have to wait at all.  I had already bought my tickets online, and we were first in line on one of the roller coasters and one of the water slides.  It was the perfect day to go.  It was a little cloudy at first, but it cleared up and ended up being sunny and hot.  The X Coaster was our favorite ride, and you can see it in the background of the bottom middle picture.  We stayed until about 5:30 and then drove back to Little Rock.  Even though we have Flying Fish in Memphis, we decided to try the one in Little Rock too.  I got a pound of steamed shrimp, and then realized that a pound of shrimp is a lot of food.  The shrimp were huge, and I had lots of leftovers.  Luckily, Shane helped out some.  They also had some of the best bread pudding I've ever had!

We headed back home on Saturday and rode the golf cart around the neighborhood that afternoon until it was time for my and my mother-in-law's birthday party at Shane's sister's house.  She had tons of good food, but my favorite was probably the cupcakes that she made.  Shane may or may not have eaten 2.5 of them in one sitting, and he doesn't even like desserts very much.  I learned that I am in fact very bad at cornhole, but we still had a great time!  I am definitely one of those people who end up celebrating for a week.  What did everyone else do for 4th of July?  Do you celebrate your birthday for a week too?

  4. I am awful at cornhole. It's embarassing! I used to blame it on "being tipsy" but since I barely drink now that I have Ella, it's apparent that I just suck.

  33. Happy belated birthday! It looks like you had a fantastic time :) I have never heard of Magic Springs, but truth be told I've only been to LR maybe 3x my whole life. I totally feel you on the celerbating for a week thing... since my birthday is on Christmas day, I somehow end up dragging my birth week to a birth month thru January/New Years... it's ridiculous.
