Mermaid Curls Tutorial: How I've Been Curling My Hair Wrong My Entire Life + Jose Eber Curling Wand Giveaway!!

Mermaid Curls Tutorial: How I've Been Curling My Hair Wrong My Entire Life by fashion blogger Walking in Memphis in High Heels

I know, I know.  I've been blogging for almost 5 years, and I'm FINALLY getting around to sharing a hair tutorial.  First of all I have to say that until this past year, I had been completely curling my hair wrong my entire life!  I have always curled it all the same direction and would end up with one big curl that I kept having to separate.  But these few little secrets below will actually make your hair look even thicker, more natural and help your mermaid curls last longer!  For this tutorial I am using the Jose Eber Clipless Curling Wand Trio.  It comes with 3 different sized barrels, and I use the largest, the 1.5 inch.  I've been using this wand for at least 4 years now, and I am obsessed.  It's the only curling wand I've ever used.  It heats up super fast and didn't take very long for me to get used to it (for newbies use a glove the first few tries!)  P.S.  Make sure to keep reading after the mermaid curls tutorial because I will be giving away the same curling wand I use in the tutorial and there is also a video!

I usually wash my hair at night and just let it air dry, but since I was short on  time when filming this, I washed my hair the morning of and then blow-dried it.  I do use a little of this light oil on the ends to smooth it.  I apply it while my hair is wet and then let it dry.  I have naturally wavy hair so I usually have a headful of wavy hair to work with, but since I blow-dried it, it is fairly straight.  I love curling my hair after it has air dried for a couple reasons.  First of all, I would rather work with my natural texture - wavy - than against it, and the wave helps with the mermaid curls.  Second of all, the texture seems to help hold the curls a little better after it's been air dried instead of blow dried smooth.  After my hair is dry, I part my hair down the middle and put half of my hair on one side and the other half on the other.  I know some people like to clip their hair up and only focus on one section at a time, but I prefer to just do it all and work my way from top to bottom, right to left.

Think of your hair as having 4 quadrants.  Quadrant 1 is the top half of the right side.  Quadrant 2 is the bottom half of the right side.  Quadrant 3 is the top half of the left side.  And quadrant 4 is the bottom half of the left side.  After my hair is sectioned off, I grab about a 1-1.5 inch section from the right top side.  Then I skip that little section for now.  See above.  That straight strand hanging down in the front is the section I skip.  I like to save my 2 front face framing pieces for last.  Then I move to the piece behind it in quadrant 1.  This piece will be curled away from your face.  When you get to them, you will also be curling the piece we skipped away from your face, and you will do the same thing on the left side too.  I usually slide the wand all the way up to the root and then just wrap the hair around it until you get about 2 inches from the bottom of the hair and then I stop.  I leave the bottom part of the hair out to give it more of a natural loose mermaid curls look instead of tight curls all the way down.

Then I move to quadrant 2, the bottom of the right side.  And I do the opposite of what I did for the first piece.  Instead of curling the hair away from my face, I curl it into my face.  I alternate so that your entire hair doesn't just curl into itself where you're left with one big ringlet.  I love the way the mermaid curls look, and it also makes your hair look even thicker than curling it all the same direction I think.  Then I move back up the next top piece in quadrant 1 and curl that one towards my face (since the first piece was away from my face.)  Then for the direct piece below it, I curl that one away from my face.  The next top piece would go away from my face.  And for the bottom piece, it would curl towards my face.

After you curl each piece, gently let the curl slide off the wand and hold the curl in your hand for 1-2 seconds.  This will help "set" the curl so that it will hold longer.  Then release it and go to the next section.  Not everyone does this, but I swear by it (as I'm sitting here today at work with 6 day hair.)  I'm not very big on products, but if you are, feel free to spray some hairspray or other product on each section of hair either before or after curling.

Got it?  Then just keep repeating until you've finished all the hair on the right side.  Then start on the left side doing the same thing.  With the first section, curl it away from your face.  For the bottom piece, curl it towards your face and so on until you've finished that entire side too.  After you finish, take your favorite flatiron out and pull it through the bottom 3-4 inches of your hair to straighten out the ends.  I like to do this to give it more of a un-perfect look and keep it looking natural.  You can really tell above in the first picture for reference.  = )

Next you will curl those 2 front pieces away from your face that we saved for last.  I curl them exactly like the others, except I ususally start just a little lower down from the root - about 3 inches. Then grab your blowdryer and blast all of your hair on the cool setting for about 10-15 seconds.  This will help set those mermaid curls too and make them last even longer.  Then you will want to comb your fingers through your hair.  This will help loosen them up a bit to give them more of a loose and natural look.  It is up to you how loose you want to make them.  Some people even brush through them some.  I usually go about 5 days between washing though, so I like to keep my mermaid curls a little tighter so I never have to curl them again until after I wash my hair again.

That's a wrap! This might have been a little long to read (or long to watch on the video below), but it honestly only takes about 15 minutes.  I've cut down my hair curling time in half by using the curling wand.  I also do fairly thick pieces of hair at a time.  So what do you think of my mermaid curls tutorial?  Have you curled your hair like this before?  Have you used a curling wand before and what did you think?  P.S.  Make sure to head below to enter to win your own curling wand trio!

  53. Your hair honestly looks like mermaid curls and it's absolute perfection! I'm jealous of your length and body. My hair is ridiculously thin and fine, so I have to wash it every day, and my curls never hold - even with an immense amount of hairspray. So I usually curl them, and brush them out for super loose waves. But this curling wand sounds fantastic!

  155. I'd love to try this wand - I'm not great with curling my hair, but perhaps the experience would be improved with a better tool!

  161. I used a curling iron that had mist that came out of little holes to keep hair from becoming too frazzled. It had a light that came on when heated up enough to curl.

  163. Saw your video. Wouldn't it be great if you could curl it that quickly. I couldn't believe how long your hair was before you started curling it. It looks beautiful!!!
